Curried Split Pea Soup
Curried split pea soup
It takes me so ridiculously long to post about things that I make that sometimes I have photos of food where I totally can't remember what it was. Just now I was preparing this post and got the photo ready then realized that it was a photo of a different soup. So I spent some time going through my cookbooks trying to figure out what soup that one was... Turns out it was a Tibetan lentil soup from Fresh at Home which was good but not as memorable as this curried split pea soup.
The split pea soup imposter - Tibetan lentil soup.
I don't think I've ever had split pea soup before or maybe never even had split peas. And what is a life if you have never tried split pea soup! I bought my split peas from the bulk section, you know the containers where you pull down the tab to fill your bag? I was delighted to see how green the split peas were. I just assumed split peas were always a yellowish colour because of the peas they put in the front of the container for display (which must be old). As I was grating the carrot into the soup before serving, I was wondering why I was doing it. E suggested that it was to mimic bits of ham. I know this isn't quite a traditional split pea soup but I really enjoyed it.
I'm getting married 1 month from today!!! (And still don't have a cake confirmed haha.)

Adapted from Vegan with a Vengeance
1/2 tsp olive oil
1 onion, cut into 1/4" dice (about 2 cups)
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 tbsp fresh ginger, minced
2 tsp curry powder
1 tsp ground cumin
1/4 tsp ground coriander
1/4 tsp ground cardamom
1 1/2 tsp salt
7 cups water
424 g dried split peas (original recipe called for 454 g, I didn't have enough)
1 carrot
In a stockpot, saute the onions in the olive oil over medium heat for about 5 minutes. Add the garlic, ginger, spices and salt. Saute for 2 more minutes.
Add the water and stir well. Add the split peas. Cover and bring to a boil.
Bring heat back down to medium; simmer for about an hour, until the peas are tender. Grate in the carrot and serve.

I do really like split pea soup! I've never added curry to mine so that's what I'll try next (I love that cookbook!). Yum.
I have quite a few pictures where I have no idea what the recipe is. I've given up on them. I'm glad you find this recipe though because it sounds delicious!
yay split pea soup! I should make some of that. I just have to find the smoke seasoning...er, at the store, not in our pantry.
(No big wedding cake is totally ok. We served sliced pound cake w stewed michigan apples at our wedding--just picked it from the catering co's standard desserts--and everything was Fine. It's ok!)
never had curried split peas but love split pea soup - I especailly love it with smoked paprika and did it once with ginger, watercress an
d star anise which was amazing. It reminds me of my childhood when my mum would make us ham and pea soup - such great comfort food.
glad you found the pictures and found out what they are - I know the feeling!
I've had curried yellow split peas, but not green--love the idea. I love split pea soup (my favorite is a split pea + barley combo, I recommend it if you have some split peas left!).
Good luck on your wedding! Hope we get a peek :)
Wow congrats! I didn't know (or forgot) you were getting married soon. This looks like the perfect soup for a cold winter's day. My boy hates legumes of all kinds, but that just means more for me!
That's funny, I'm the same way when it comes to posting. However, sometimes I take so long to post about it that I forgo writing about it altogether. You soup looks good though! hmm I've never seen yellow split peas or maybe I have, but just never paid attention. lol
And Congrats on getting married in a month! You must be pretty busy planning and everything. If you're having a multi-layered cake, you can do different flavors. That way you don't have to choose just one. lol
Send me pictures!
I do love split pea soup but don't have a great recipe. I should try this one. Congrats for the wedding! So exciting.
It must be exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time to have your wedding so close. It will be great. :)
It always amuses me what lags for some of my posts.... sometimes it is just getting the photos off my camera, or typing up the recipe, or most often thinking of something to say other than "make this recipe" hehehehe. :)
I've never made split peas before but I am on a current bean kick - all beans - so I may try this one out eventually.... when the split peas go on sale, of course. :)
A curried split pea soup sounds good!
This is really perfect for a cold winter night by the fireplace.
My husband is convinced he doesn't like split pea soup which is a shame because I love it. I've never actually made it for him because every time I mention it, he makes a face. I may just try and trick him. So, Jan 2nd is the big day? That is Randy's birthday! Best to you both.
A classic! The VwaV split pea soup was actually the first version I ever made myself, so many years ago. Ah good memories...
