Salt & Pepper Tofu

I love tofu but I've had a hard time amassing a decent collection of yummy tofu recipes. There's the honey-mustard marinated tofu, lemon miso tofu, lemon soy garlic ginger tofu, and the ever tasty Matthew's delicious tofu. I've tried lots of others but these are the only ones I've really loved, as stand alone tofu dishes anyway. But recently I've found a few new tofu recipes that are keepers, like this one. There's a salt and pepper tofu dish at Chinese restaurants that I love, so I was hoping this one would be like that, and while it does have the essential elements of salt, pepper and jalapeno, it's not deep fried. (Though if you check out Erin's, it looks more nice and fried than mine.) The first time I made it, I added the recommended 1 tablespoon salt (I used sea salt) and holy man was it ever salty. But I had high hopes for this recipe so tried it again with 1 teaspoon of salt and it was much better. If you have a favourite tofu recipe please share it in the comments!

Salt & Pepper Tofu
Adapted from fresh365 who adapted from Secrets of the Red Lantern

1 package extra-firm tofu (12-16 oz), drained
1 jalapeño pepper, minced
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 t fresh ginger, peeled and minced
1 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper
1 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp five-spice powder
2 tbsp olive oil
4 green onions, chopped

With a sharp knife, cut tofu, lengthwise into thirds. Place side-by-side on an absorbent towel and cover with an additional towel. Place a heavy pot on top of the towels (the heavier the better, as you are trying to extract as much water as possible from the tofu) and let sit 20-30 minutes. Cut tofu into 1" cubes.

In a large bowl, combine jalapeño, garlic, ginger, salt, pepper, sugar and five-spice powder. Stir well and add tofu cubes. Toss until tofu cubes are well coated on all sides. In a large skillet, heat oil and add tofu (and spices). Cook on medium-low heat, 8 minutes, turning cubes every 1-2 minutes. Add green onions and cook an additional 2 minutes, until tofu is golden brown.

I'm always on the lookout for good tofu recipes as well. One of my favorites is Fat Free Vegan Kitchen's tofu, tempeh, butternut squash and peanut mole stew. It's amazing!

I'm definitely going to have to try this. It's sounds delicious in its simplicity.

My sister served to me a wonderful pasta dish with tofu in it.
It used elbow macaroni, onions, garlic, green peppers, spagetti sauce, pine nuts and of course tofu.
Tofu is fried with onions and garlic in olive oil. Green peppers are added next and sweated. Elbow macaroni that has been cooked and drained along with a can of your favorite spag. sauce is added next. Add pine nuts at the end and stir into pasta. It's delicious!

I love tofu as well and have had pretty good luck with it. I am bookmarking your faves! My most recent favourite tofu dish had a zesty rhubarb sauce which was amazing. I think rhubarb season is ending, though.

I also really liked this baked tofu with a hoisin sauce.

I normally just toss tofu into any dish. I can honestly eat it anyway, fresh, grilled, sauteed or sweet (soft tofu).

What I normally do is pair tofu with something spicy and something else salty. I also think a little oil is good too. I just made a tofu dish last night. Will post about it soon.

Meanwhile, I hope that helps!

oh I forgot to mention that tofu (firm and silken) are good in soups too.

I am really getting into tofu now Ashley, in fact I had it last night with sweet and sour vegetables. Mmmmmmm, it was good. I am on the lookout for new recipes all the time now, so I am glad you have linked to a few. My favourite so far has been Vegetable & Tofu Stir-Fry with a Teriyaki Marinade.

I grew up with and adoring tofu and all soy products (except maybe tempeh, which I'm still learning to accept haha) so this looks deeelicious to me. But as for the S&P tofu you're looking for, it sounds similar to this one from the PPK: http://www.postpunkkitchen.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=39304 I haven't tried it but it looks good.

I'm like you, always on the hunt for new tofu recipes! This one sounds like a winner--I bet the 5-spice makes it delicious. :)

Erin's tofu preparation has actually been my go-to as of late. I have been wanting to try freezing tofu, which I've never done and hear is great for marinating.

Looks like Abby took pretty well to your mom's pup! I'm pretty sure my cats would lose it.

I've been craving this exact dish for weeks now! I love how simple and yet complex-tasting it turns out... It all depends on the quality of the tofu, really.

There is a super peppery tofu recipe in one of the Ottolenghi cookbooks that I am dying to try - will post if I love it. Do you ever find that tofu gives you a stomach ache? I always take Beano before eating it, but always end up unhappy. Total bummer because I love it so.

Tofu is often my protein of choice when we eat at Asian restaurants because I love it and never really get a good recipe to eat it at home! I'll definitely be trying this out ;)

Just tried this for lunch today - it was a quick and easy recipe! Tasted yummy, though I didn't have the five-spice powder so it probably wasn't quite up to par. I'll definitely make it again if I can get my hands on the five spice powder!
We tried the Thai Chick-Un Pizza the other day too - FABULOUS!!!

Thanks for the recipes!
