Outrageous Oreo Crunch Brownies
Now these brownies are just dangerous. It made a huge 9x13 pan (and this was halving the recipe) and I ended up freezing most of them. And now for the past couple of months I've been slowly nibbling away at my stash. I love eating them frozen - they're so fudgey, rich and chocolatey. Yum yum dangerous. Of course they're delicious at room temperature too.
Oh and guess what? I finally got the Baker's Edge Brownie Pan!!! I've yet to use it but can't wait to try it out. Mind you when I use it I'm going to want to eat the whole pan because brownie edge pieces are really hard to resist. Actually I'm thinking about making Peabody's snickerdoodle blondies in it. How good do those look?

Outrageous Oreo Crunch Brownies
Adapted from Ina Garten found on La cuisine d'Hélène
2 sticks (1 cup) unsalted butter
1/2 pound semisweet chocolate, chopped
3 ounces unsweetened chocolate, chopped
3 eggs
1 1/2 tablespoons instant coffee granules
1 tablespoons vanilla
1 cup + 2 tbsp sugar
1/2 cup + 2 tbsp flour
1/2 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
25 Oreo cookies, chopped
Arrange a rack in the middle of the oven and preheat to 350°F. Butter and flour a 9"x13" baking pan.
In a heatproof medium bowl set over a saucepan of simmering water, heat butter, chocolate chips and unsweetened chocolate until melted and smooth. Allow to cool slightly.
In a large bowl, whisk eggs, coffee, vanilla and sugar. Blend chocolate mixture into egg mixture; cool to room temperature.
In a medium bowl, sift together 1/2 cup flour, baking powder and salt. Add flour mixture to chocolate mixture. In a small bowl, stir Oreos and remaining 2 tablespoons flour. Add Oreo mixture to chocolate mixture. Pour batter into baking pan and smooth top with a rubber spatula.
Bake 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted 3 inches from center comes out clean; do not overbake. Allow to cool. Refrigerate until cold then cut into squares.

But how much grams is a stick of butter? Should it be melted?
Sefi: There's a really great butter converter here: http://www.traditionaloven.com/conversions_of_measures/butter_converter.html. 1 stick = 113.4 grams.
Sefi: Oh and yes you do end up melting the butter as you'll see in the second paragraph of the recipe. It's not pre-melted or anything though.

I think I could only make these if I was baking for a large group, as I would eat myself sick otherwise. They look AMAZING, though.

I've never tried frozen brownies, but it does sound delicious!!
Most people commented before making them. This is a very mediocre recipe at best. I would definitely nix the instant coffee granules. I only used 1 tablespoon and that was bad enough. Also, they could be more rich. Instead of 1 cup (half pound) of semisweet morsels, I'd up it to 3/4 pound (1 1/2 cups). Good firmness though.

You may have changed the ingredients part of the recipe, but the directions still use one and one fourth cups. Very confusing.

I followed this recipe to the hilt. The 3 ounces of unsweetened chocolate and the 1/2 lb unsweetened chocolate with the coffee made these brownies bitter. No sweetness at all. Needs less unsweetened chocolate or more sugar or both.

Rhonda: That's too bad you didn't like it. It's supposed to be 1/2 lb semisweet chocolate, not unsweetened chocolate - not sure if you used all unsweetened or used some semisweet.
Oh I absolutely love these. I seem to make them every time I want to test out variations on brownies!
I just made these this morning. While I cannot comment on the flavor yet as I just took them out of the oven, I do need to comment on baking time. These only took 25 minutes to bake, and I'm concerned that even at that length of time, they are potentially overcooked. I set the timer 10 minutes short just to make sure, and still... very disappointed! :-(

This recipe doesnt work, i followed it exactly, but its didnt bind, there wasnt enough flour in it to hold the mixture, however it does make for one heck of a yummy brownie gooey mess, i think you need to almost double the flour at least a full cup!

Your brownies look wonderful. Love the bits of oreos you can see. I like the idea of eating them cold out of the freezer. With three children and their friends over all the time nothing lasts to get into the freezer.
Btw, I made Peabody's snickerdoodle blondies. They were good but Julia of Dozen Flours has (in my opinion) a better one. I've made both (julia's several times) and everyone who has had them loves them. When I made Peabody's they knew it wasn't same. I didn't tell them just to see. Either way I'll be back to see your opinion.

I made this recipe the other day and the brownies turned out great! I loved that they were fudgy, rather than cakey. They really do taste best cold, unexpectedly. I'd make this recipe again in a heartbeat.

Hi y'all. I would like to say a big THANK YOU for this recipe. I went with the double recipe, and just today I ran my third batch. Would have to agree to shorten the cooking time slightly for a maximum chocklaty fudgy experience. Too bad I am on a low carb diet.. ok I went in the deep end first time I made them and chomped down 15 in a weekend. :)....
I think I'm going to have to buy a brownie pan and make these. Actually I bought mint Newman-O's at the store today...yum... I think the mint should make up for the fact that I won't be using coffee in it (allergy).
My roommates and I made these for another roommates birthday and they turned out amazing! We decorated them with pink icing and they looked so pretty :)
One word of caution...make sure you leave the oreo pieces big enough so they don't get lost in the mixture.

Since no one really drinks coffee in my house, I bought a small packet of single serve instant coffee packets, and discovered that two packets equals the amount called for in the recipe. However, on the second batch I only used one packet, and I think that added just enough coffee flavor.

Michelle: The coffee/espresso enhances the chocolate flavour. You don't taste it. If you don't have any then don't worry about adding it. Hope your boyfriend likes them!

Hi! These brownies were pretty great! A little on the super-rich side however. My boyfriend made them (I dictated) with half the butter and they were delicious (but like I said, still very rich). I'd suggest maybe taking out an egg too.
Also, I'd suggest eating them with something fruity... just to offset the weighty-ness.
Okay, I'm getting hungry again......
I liked this recipe for brownies pretty well but I would have to agree that it was really rich! It's a great dish to take to pot luck dinners because it's hard to have more than one...

I tried this recipe and they were delicious. But I love cheesecake brownies, so now this is my go to recipe for making my now famous cheesecake oreo brownies. After you pour the oreo brownie mix into your pan top it off with a mixture of 16oz cream cheese, 1 tsp vanilla, 2/3c sugar, and 2 eggs. Spread it out over the brownie mixture and you can even make a nice design on top if you save some of the brownie mixture. Thank you for this recipe, I use it at least once a week! they go fast :)

I tried it using mildly sweet oreo and sub 15g of semisweet chocolate chips with unsweetened chocolate, but still think it's way too sweet ~_~
the flavor is probably a little too strong for most asians I believe~ I will try again with less sugar next time.
