Earl Grey White Chocolate Chunk Muffins

I've been dreaming of these decadent muffins for quite some time - Earl Grey white chocolate sour cream based muffins. I've mentioned before how I have this Earl Grey obsession. I want to try it in everything! (Next an Earl Grey creme brulee, mmm.)

Once the muffins were baked I was so very eager to try one. It didn't taste quite like the lemon poppy seed muffins that uses the same base. I know the flavours are totally different but something was still not the same. I thought it might just be that I replaced some of the all purpose flour with whole wheat. But then my boyfriend tried them and he immediately picked up on it - I forgot to add the sugar. Durr. They were still good though and the white chocolate helped to make up for the missing sugar. I have to make these again though, with the sugar, to truly satisfy my craving.

Earl Grey White Chocolate Chunk Muffins
Adapted from Baking From My Home To Yours

2/3 cup sugar
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon ground Earl Grey tea (or more if you dare)
3/4 cup sour cream
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 stick (8 tablespoons) unsalted butter, melted and cooled
3/4 cup white chocolate chunks

Center a rack in the oven and preheat the oven to 400F. Butter or spray the 12 molds in a regular-size muffin pan or fit the molds with paper muffin cups.

In a large bowl, whisk together the sugar, flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and ground Earl Grey tea. In a large glass measuring cup or another bowl, whisk the sour cream, eggs, vanilla, and melted butter together until well blended. Pour the liquid ingredients over the dry ingredients and, with the whisk or a rubber spatula, gently but quickly stir to blend. Don't worry about being thorough - a few lumps are better than over mixing the batter. Stir in the white chocolate chunks. Divide the batter evenly among the muffins cups.

Bake for 18 to 20 minutes, or until the tops are golden and a thin knife inserted into the center of the muffins comes out clean. Transfer the pan to a rack and cool for 5 minutes before carefully removing each muffin from its mold.

How frustrating to forget an ingredient. My biggest mistake was when baking a chocolate sour cream birthday cake. I accidently used baking Powder instead of the called for baking Soda. The result was that the cake rose very quickly and then fell flat :( It was a layer cake and each layer ended up about 1". Actually it tasted pretty good, more like a flourless cake in texture. We ate the whole cake!

Very inventive combination of Earl Grey, sour cream and white chocolate.

These muffins are so different. Interesting with the addition of Earl Grey. 2/3 cup of sugar is a lot. Good thing you had the chocolate in them.

What an interesting combination of flavors! They look great. I think the sugar amount is fine as the Tea will definitely make them a tad bitter. Very cool recipe. Thanks for showcasing it!

Although I don't drink tea, I must say that these Earl Grey white-chocolate chunk muffins look and sound BEYOND tantalizing!! Such an innovative flavor-combination!!

Even though you didn't add the sugar THIS time, there's always next time (as you said) to truly satisfy your craving ;0)

I love the look of texture in these! Do not feel bad, I forgot the sugar once in a muffin also, but drizzeled honey over them and they turned out terrific. But these look so good that I would try it again with the sugar!

My visit in Vancouver was wonderful. I spent most of the days watching volleyball in Langley. Had little time to shop. I finally stop, on my way back, at middle eastern grocery. The pita bread is fabulous and I found great spices. Thanks again.

All of these muffins look so good! It really makes me want to get in the kitchen and make some =)

What a creative flavor combination- Earl grey so so rarely used as a flavor, but I can imagine that a simple, sweet, white chocolate would pair well without overpowering it. Nice choice!

Earl gray and white chocolate sound like they would make and excellent muffin!

Interesting that they were still edible without the sugar - maybe you could get away with less than you normally add because of the chocolate?

Love the idea of Earl Grey in a muffin. I always drink Early
Grey in the afternoons (I'm obviously very English deep down!)

I feel silly asking this, but... is the ground tea the same tea thats inside a tea bag?

Interesting flavor combination. It sounds like it would be a really good muffin to try.

As I enjoy a savory muffin, I probably would have enjoyed these without the sugar. Tea is an interesting addition. Looking yummy!

I once started to put a cake in the oven without sugar and had to put it back in the bowl to add the sugar - made a difference to the texture as well as the taste.

Love the idea of earl grey in a muffin - I don't like tea but I love the fragrance of earl grey and have had a few good experiences with recipes with green tea and chai tea lately

My parents really like Earl Grey, so I may have to pull this one out the next time I go home. They'd enjoy it.

oh i love the idea of tea as an ingredient and in these muffins it certainly works! They turned out so beautifully, too! I wonder how banana would be in them? Makes me want to go into the kitchen and experiment :)

TASTEY DELICIOUS

I just made these and they were quite succesful. I might try adding a tad more earl grey next time because the white chocolate chunks made it quite sweet. But overall, yum!

I am definitely the kind of person who would forget an ingredient (and not just once in a while), so I made sure to add the sugar FIRST! :)

They're baking right now and smell absolutely lovely. Thank you for a fun recipe! This batch is going to an avid Earl Grey lover, who I'm sure will enjoy them mucho.

I made them cauple of days ago with Lady Grey! They were (paste tense used on purpose) absolutely fantastic! Thanks for a great recipe!

Delicious. Though were I made the batter.. it came out like Cookie batter and I had some dry ingredients leftover. I used Earl Grey teabags for my Earl Grey.

The next time I make these I'm going to use Dark Chocolate along with the white.

Thanks again for this recipe! Those muffins went quick!

I stumbled across this recipe on your blog nearly two years ago, and it's still one of my all-time favorites. Every time I make a batch, I end up referring at least a handful of new people to this page when they ask for the recipe.

I've recently discovered a fondness for making these with Lady Grey tea. The faint citrus-y tones give these babies an extra little kick of awesome.

I just pulled your blog up now (for the millionth time, I'm sure :) to make a new batch, and realized I've never given you my kudos. So, without much further ado, Thank you for this lovely recipe :)

Teresa: Aw thanks for leaving this message! =) I'm so happy you love these muffins and love them enough to send people here. I haven't tried them with lady earl grey but it sounds delicious! I should make another batch of these... it's been so long!

Same boat as Teresa! I came across your lemon poppy seed muffins a couple of years ago (love them!), and shortly after a friend found your Earl Grey muffins (love them too!). Just today I posted links for both on my friend & SIL's fb page, and she wrote back mentioning the Lady Grey reference in the comment section. So of course I came to check it out, and had to chuckle when reading Teresa's note. I too, have visited this page many a time, and have yet to leave a note, so here it is! :)

tsbjf: That's great that you love both those muffin recipes. :) They're both favourites of mine too! Thanks for commenting!

loll..one time i added the sugar twice while making a cheesecake, and when my family ate it, they almost threw up, b/c it was overly sweet!
